On May 24th, the BRICS Industrial Internet and Digital Manufacturing Development Index was released in Xiamen, Fujian Province. According to the index, BRICS countries each have their own distinctive features and advantages in terms of industrial Internet and digital manufacturing development. However, the comprehensive calculations have shown that China has demonstrated more advantages.

According toZhang Xiaoyan, Deputy Director of China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), the Industrial Internet Index is comprehensively calculated according to four first-level indicators including basic environment, industrial development, market vitality and international influence, which then fall into eight second-level indicators. According to the comprehensive calculation results, China (39.15) and India (35.87) have shown advantages in development, while Russia (34.00), Brazil (31.44) and South Africa (30.81) still have room for improvement. The design and calculation results of the Industrial Internet Index show that China and Russia have more advantages in basic environment; Brazil and South Africa are more competitive in industrial development; India and Brazil are ahead of other BRICS countries in market vitality; while India and China are increasingly influential internationally.
The Digital Manufacturing Development Index is based on four first-level indexes, namely, synergy index, industrial index, science and technology index and environment index, which then fall into 10 second-level indexes. According to the results, China’s digital manufacturing ranked the first with a total score of 37.5, followed by Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa. The development of digital manufacturing in BRICS countries has distinctive features. Brazil and China are more advantageous in terms of coordinated development and scientific and technological development; while in terms of industrial development and environment foundation, India and South Africa are more advanced and Russia has the strength and foundation for development.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Fujian Provincial People’s Government and Xiamen Municipal People’s Government, and with the support of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, the BRICS Industrial Internet and Digital Manufacturing Development Index was compiled by China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID). The quantitative analysis enabled systematic and comprehensive evaluation of the development status and cooperation potential of industrial Internet and digital manufacturing in BRICS countries, thus providing reference for further strengthening of cooperation among BRICS countries.
